Blooms
Whether flowering in my garden, in my neighbor’s yard, along my morning walk, or in my imagination, blooms are among my favorite batik subjects, for their variety of colors, textures, grace, and geometry.

Cala Lily Emerges
The characteristic white spots on the cala lily leaves create movement in this batik.

Light through Hostas
Greens can be tricky with batik. I challenged myself to show the light coming through layers of Hosta leaves making varied greens without making mud.

Creating a batik using opposite colors such as purple and yellow offered a daunting challenge in this close up of an iris.

Deep Iris
I took a picture of this flower in my front garden. I wanted to zoom in close to see its textures and colors. I like the juxtaposition of the green and purple color families. This is a good example of the planning batik work requires. Getting light and dark colors to sit alongside each other is a challenge.

Cone Flower
I took a picture of this flower in my garden, then built an imagined masonry window around it. I like the contrast between the light coming from the rear window and the shadows surrounding the flower. It feels mysterious to me.

What is a Weed?
This batik was chosen from among many entries from batik artists all around the world for inclusion in the Batik Guild’s 2023 wall calendar. In 2023, it went on display at a gallery in Hamilton, Ohio.

Five Sunflowers
This pot of flowers was kind of an experiment for me. Where most of my artwork is painted, this one is dipped in colors. It looks like a collage with four panes, but it is all one piece, born of imagination.
Not for sale.
Flower Facets
My friend and neighbor Robert had an incredible garden. I loved going to his house and taking gobs of pictures. This is one of his sunflowers. I like the way the light hits it. A sunflower is a sunflower, whether it’s seen from the front or the back.

I found this lovely sunflower at a friends greenhouse.

This beauty bloomed with its friends in a neighbor’s garden. I like the fractal curves of light moving through the petals.

Yellow Iris
Robert’s Iris
The subtle contrasts of highlights and shadows on a peach color can create a riveting illusion of form.
16 x 20”
I discovered this family of irises on one of my morning walks. With the batik crackling effect, it reminds me of Tiffany stained glass. A lot of depth with a shallow palette. I made one in purple, as well.
