Musings
Some ideas and resulting batiks don’t fit into a single category. Risk taking and experimentation is part of my artistic development. This is a collection of those artworks.

Musings
Abstracted Iris
Changes in color and value are added to pull your eye to the center of the iris.
Noir Series
This is a set of three small batiks. They are inspired by the theme Noir and Mid-Century Modern shapes. The strong contrast of neutral values and crackled wax dying give it an urban feel. The batiks are gallery wrapped around framed so the designs continue on all the edges.
They work as a set or individually.
This collage is an explosion of color! Started with no definite plan, just a basic image and sets of colors. Can you guess from the title where the image started?

Corning Blossom
This was inspired by a quilt trail I once followed in Kentucky. Quilts are pieced together, but this is just one piece, dyed as one image.
16” x 16”
Star Barn Quilt
This batik is made with linen, rather than my customary Kona cotton. I like the crackle here, an effect that is more difficult to control and happens more often on linen than cotton.

Victorian Lace
One of my very first batiks. I was pleased with the outcome. I like that it looks three-dimensional, like a shadow box.
14” x 14”
Hearts in a Box
Three of Hearts
An early batik, created at the same time as Hearts in a Box. I wanted to make something that looks like stained glass. I like the effect of creating curved shapes with stripes. The colors blend like water colors.

My husband and I went to hear the fabulous Dave Powers play jazz improvization and covers by Dave Brubeck, and this is what I heard.
10” x 21”
Jazz
While most of my batiks are cotton, this one is made with linen I got from batik artist Arnelle Dow when she retired. I challenged myself to create an intricate design on the textural surface presented by linen. This piece reminds me of cartography.

Compass Rose
Here’s another batik on linen. This one makes me think of a ceiling design, like looking up at a rotunda.

Rotunda View
Another batik inspired by a barn quilt square painting. While quilts are pieced together, but this is just one piece, dyed as one image
Pinwheel
Sunflower Quilt Square
A barn quilt square inspired by the shapes and colors of a sunflower.

An early work, this batik is an effort to create the illusion of a three-dimensional surface with color and light.

Rag Rug
Mosaic Skull
This early piece was inspired by a mosaic 3D skull I saw at an art show at a biker bar.
12” x 15” framed.

Intertwining shapes create unexpected patterns.
